The Right Hand
Get a job out of your head and into a system your team can follow — the same way, every time.

How you do it — just brain-dump it
Check levels and falls off the damp course, aim for a fall of about 1 in 80 away from the house. Full bed of mortar, 4 to 1 sharp sand and cement, not spot dabs. Prime the back of each slab with slurry. Lay to a string line, keep a consistent 8 to 10mm joint, tap down with a rubber mallet, check level as you go. Keep the slab faces clean of mortar. Let it set before pointing. Sweep off and protect from rain.
Talk it through as if telling a new lad on site. It tidies it up.
Who'll follow it
What good looks like
Right fall, no lippage between slabs, tight even joints, clean faces, no hollow slabs. A patio the client would be chuffed with and we'd be proud to photograph.
What usually goes wrong
Spot-dabbing instead of a full bed (hollow slabs and cracks), not priming the backs, rushing the levels, and getting mortar on the slab faces and leaving it.
